    Iraq 14 Norway

Four goals conceded tells one story; the thirty-ninth minute tells another. With Norway already ahead through Erling Haaland, Aymen Hussein levelled it, Amir Al-Ammari supplying, and for four minutes Iraq stood toe to toe with one of the most valuable squads in this tournament. Then Haaland struck again and the gulf reasserted itself, Leo Østigård adding a fourth late. The expected goals read 0.77 to 2.53 and the scoreline was honest. But they scored against Norway, and that goal was theirs alone.

Full time · The Report Every inch the outsider

    Iraq 03 France

Iraq came up against the tournament's most expensive side and were made to look every inch the outsider. They did not manage a single shot on target across the ninety minutes, and Kylian Mbappé's brace either side of half-time put the result beyond doubt before Ousmane Dembélé added a third. Their goalkeeper made a couple of saves and spared them something heavier. Three-nil is a fair reflection of a night spent chasing. The group offers gentler examinations than France.

    Iraq 05 Senegal

There is not much a team can do about an afternoon like this. Iraq lost Rebin Sulaka to a red card in the thirteenth minute, and against a Senegal ranked twelfth in the field, ten men was an impossible ask. The expected-goals line, 3.1 to 0.18, captures a near-total siege: twenty-eight shots faced, sixty-nine percent of the ball conceded, wave after wave to repel. That it finished five and not more owed everything to a goalkeeper who made seven saves and never stopped competing. A chastening night, with one defiant man in goal its only real consolation.

Friendship blends realized national co-starts with a club-chemistry bonus, so a settled XI and a club-spine squad both score high. Near 100 the total eases so the most-settled squads stay separated rather than all tying out. Gold lines trace the spine: teammates who share a club right now.
