About Algeria
Population 47.4M
- It's the largest country in Africa — over 2.3 million square kilometres — yet four-fifths of it is Sahara, so almost everyone lives in the slim green strip along the Mediterranean.
- Stone tools unearthed at Ain Boucherit are about 1.9 million years old, hinting that human ancestors lived in North Africa far earlier than once thought.
- In the 16th and 17th centuries the corsairs of Algiers were fearsome enough that Britain, France, Spain, the Netherlands — and even the young United States — paid them tribute.
- Around 697 AD the Berber warrior-queen Kahina rallied resistance and beat back invading armies in the Aurès Mountains before she was finally defeated.
- Its national energy company, Sonatrach, is the single biggest company in all of Africa, built on some of the world's largest natural-gas reserves.

Algeria 0–3 Argentina
Algeria can say something most of Argentina's opponents cannot: they had more of the ball, fifty-two percent of it. What they could not do was test the goalkeeper, not once, across seven attempts that never found the target. At the other end Lionel Messi needed only three to settle it, and a hat-trick from him is no shame to concede to. The possession will read well and mean little. They competed for the ball all afternoon; the finishing, on both ends, decided everything.

Algeria 2–1 Jordan
Algeria spent an hour wondering if this would be one of those upsets, then made sure it wasn't. Jordan's opener against the run of play left the favourites chasing, but the numbers were always going to win out: 1.81 expected goals to Jordan's 0.65, seventeen shots, ten corners, the ball camped in the Jordan half. Benbouali equalised just before the seventieth minute and Amine Gouiri completed the turnaround late. Two-one is closer than the play, but Algeria take the comeback and the points. They left it later than they would have liked.

Algeria 3–3 Austria
Algeria poured forward all afternoon — sixty-five percent of the ball, a passing accuracy of ninety-four percent — and will feel they deserved to win this six-goal thriller. Twice they trailed, twice they hauled it back, and when Riyad Mahrez struck again in the ninety-third it looked like the dramatic winner the performance merited. Then Sasa Kalajdzic broke their hearts at the very last, levelling in the ninety-sixth. Reda Belghali had earlier cancelled out Marko Arnautovic, and Mahrez's brace dragged Algeria level each time. A breathless draw, and the side that controlled it leaves with one point, not three.

Algeria 0–2 Switzerland
Algeria had the majority of the ball and precious little to show for it. Breel Embolo's early strike put them on the back foot, Dan Ndoye's goal straight after half-time all but ended it, and for all their fifty-five percent possession they created just 0.73 expected goals to Switzerland's 2.56. Two shots on target is no way to win a knockout tie. They kept the ball; the Swiss kept the chances, and the result. Algeria are going home.

Friendship blends realized national co-starts with a club-chemistry bonus, so a settled XI and a club-spine squad both score high. Near 100 the total eases so the most-settled squads stay separated rather than all tying out. Gold lines trace the spine: teammates who share a club right now.
