    Austria 31 Jordan

Austria got the job done, though they needed the closing quarter to make it comfortable. Romano Schmid's first-half opener was cancelled out by Ali Olwan just before the hour, and for a while a Jordan side ranked 47th of 48 by value looked level on more than the scoreboard. Then the game turned Austria's way — an own goal, then a Marko Arnautovic penalty at the death — and 1.66 expected goals to 0.53 became three on the board. Professional, if not pretty. The better side, in the end, looked it.

Full time · The Report A reprieve, unbuilt on

    Austria 02 Argentina

Austria will know they were handed a reprieve and could not build on it. Lionel Messi's ninth-minute penalty miss kept the scoreline blank longer than the run of play deserved, but Argentina were a class apart — six shots to twelve, half an expected goal to Argentina's 2.65, chasing the game from the first whistle. Messi made them pay either side of the contest, and the gap on the night was wider than the two goals. There is no shame in losing to a side like this; only in how little they threatened in reply.

Full time · The Report Twice behind, never beaten

    Austria 33 Algeria

Austria were second best for long stretches and somehow refused to lose. Outpassed and pinned back to thirty-five percent of the ball, they led through Marko Arnautovic, fell behind, restored their advantage through Marcel Sabitzer, and then, with the game seemingly lost to a Riyad Mahrez brace, found one last act. Sasa Kalajdzic's header in the ninety-sixth minute snatched a point nobody in red would have predicted at the death. The expected goals, 1.62 to 1.44, say Algeria edged it; the scoreboard says Austria are made of stubborn stuff.

Full time · The Report Outclassed, and out

    Austria 03 Spain

Austria met a side operating on another level and had no reply. They managed just five shots, none on target, and an expected-goals line of 0.32 — a night spent chasing red shirts. Mikel Oyarzabal's brace and Pedro Porro's strike settled it long before the end, and their goalkeeper's six saves were all that stopped a rout. There is no shame in losing to Spain in this mood, but the gap was total. Austria's tournament ends here, thoroughly second-best.

    Goals 36' M. Oyarzabal · 66' P. Porro · 89' M. Oyarzabal

    xG 0.32–2.84 ·Poss 35% ·Shots 5 (0 on target) ·Corners 0 ·GK saves 6

Friendship blends realized national co-starts with a club-chemistry bonus, so a settled XI and a club-spine squad both score high. Near 100 the total eases so the most-settled squads stay separated rather than all tying out. Gold lines trace the spine: teammates who share a club right now.
